Neuroscientists Suggest Supplementation

research, have found that supplementing our “fight or flight” syndrome with spiritual practices can actually change our brain. Their research shows no matter how young or old a person might be, these practices can strengthen our resolve to live more evolved lives. Their recent book is entitled God Can Change Your Brain.
S
What is imperative in changing any aspect of ourselves is the daily focused practice. There are some people who would never miss their vitamin regimen, their athletic practice, or even eating an egg. Even though it is very important, to focus on what goes in our bodies, it is much more important to focus on what is going on within our minds and hearts.
Supplement is defined as something added to complete a thing, make up for a deficiency, or extend or strengthen the whole. What is wonderful is the root word “supple” which means “moving and bending with ease”. This is what many aim for on the outside but, as neuroscience is finding, what we need to be supple on the inside. I am often surprised when a person who has reached 100 is interviewed. “How did you do it?” asks the interviewer. “Well, I had a couple of shots of whiskey every night after I got home,” or “I never paid much attention to what I ate, I loved my fried chicken, I smoked a pack a day, I was just pretty happy,” or “I prayed.” I don’t know for sure but I would guess most of the octogenarians are forgiving, non-judgmental, with good genes and an innate natural practice to just let go. Vitamin supplements are wonderful and can be life chang-
ing. Yet, for an analogy, vitamin B can come in many forms, doses, and varied quality. I don’t exactly want to compare God to vitamin B, but God can be known in many forms, doses, and shall I even suggest quality of understanding. Maybe the God of your childhood or family was metaphorically a form of vitamin B that didn’t work for you. If you have been turned off by any form of God talk, possibly allowing yourself the freedom to open your neuro-pathways to new ways to find God will supple- ment your life in surprising ways. Very few vitamin supplements or change in diet work overnight. It takes a while to see how a supplement or diet is working for you. The main ingredient in change is “just do it” daily.
Another form that supplements your life force and faith is
pray about everything. Do not wait for the 911 prayer. Prayer does not have to be a bowing of the head or the folding of hands. Possibly you are talking to someone who is really begin- ning to irritate you. Take 2 seconds inside your mind and heart and ask for patience.
