“I fall, I stand still… I trudge on. I gain a little… I get more eager and climb higher and begin to see the widening horizon. Every struggle is a victory.” -- Helen Keller
Small Business Loans Access to Capital
Women business owners have less access to capital than men
– While women own 28.2 percent of all firms in the U.S., our total portion of all sales revenues continues to hover around only 4.2 percent.14
– Only one in five firms with revenue of $1 million or more is woman-owned. 3 percent of all women-owned firms have revenues of $1 million or more compared with 6 percent of men-owned firms.15
– Women own nearly 30 percent of all firms in the U.S. and secure only 3.4 percent of federal contracting dollars.16
– The federal government’s small business lending programs have not provided equal lending opportunities for women. In FY2008, the average value of U.S. Small Business Administration backed loans and equity investments provided to women-owned businesses was $165,073, compared to the average value of $242,090 for all SBA backed loans and equity investments. Overall women received only 15.4 percent of the total SBA-backed loans and equity investments.17 As of May 2010, the percentage of SBA-backed 7(a) loans going to women-owned firms dropped to 14%.18
Powerful opportunities for the future.
While the results of the great migration of women into business ownership have been mixed – economic gain, asset ownership, and opportunities are growing daily. We still have many obstacles to overcome. But this new movement to widen our horizon through business ownership has positioned us with new and powerful opportunities for future financial growth and business marketplace influence.
