A living

memorial to support the artistic

aspirations of young people

THE Helen Foundation was launched in early 2006 as a living memorial to 24-year-old Helen Kirk, a classically trained actor in London, who died after a road accident on Boxing Day, 2005. Following her untimely death, her family and friends set up The Helen Foundation to support the artistic aspirations of young people, especially those lacking financial support, within Teignbridge – the part of Devon where Helen grew up and that she loved so much. Helen was particularly gifted in working with

young people. By providing student awards in schools, subsidised arts-based workshops, project support and individual bursaries, the Helen Foundation encourages young people to pursue their ambitions just as Helen did. We have sent Teignbridge Sixth Form students to a prestigious Californian Arts Academy for a ‘life-changing’ summer, and currently support a number of young people whose parents face challenges in paying for lessons, audition travel and arts courses.

Funding began with donations following Helen’s funeral and has continued through events like the annual Big London 10K Run in July, benefit concerts, collections at local music and drama performances and many other events. There are Helen Foundation collection boxes in businesses throughout Teignbridge such

as pubs, shops and businesses. Foundation patrons include The Countess of

Devon, actress and presenter Floella Benjamin, and world-class rock group Muse, whose three members knew Helen as a friend. Their 2006 album – Black Holes and Revelations - is dedicated to Helen. We produce a monthly newsletter and supporters are warmly invited to join the email distribution list. Our website is at www.thehelenfoundation.org.uk and is updated regularly with news, features and photographs of our activities as well as providing background information on the foundation.
