Teign Heritage
Teignmouth and Shaldon Museum
TEIGNMOUTH & Shaldon Museum (Teign Heritage) is undergoing an exciting new phase. We have been most fortunate in gaining grant funding to renovate the present premises at 29 French Street and to construct a much-needed annexe. This project was made possible by two large grants from Heritage Lottery and CABE, (Commission for Architecture and Built Environment).
There have also been numerous other smaller, but equally valued donations from trusts, charities and individuals. All will of course be acknowledged in the new building. You may well ask why we are embarking on such a scheme at this point in time. There are a number of reasons for our expansion. The museum collection is an
invaluable tool to be used in promoting and explaining the town’s past and the rich heritage of our area deserves better exposure. The renovation will provide the opportunity to use the skills of a professional designer to install excellent interpretive displays which will enhance enjoyment and understanding for visitors of all ages. This also means that many of our artefacts, which are now in store, such as our restored Victorian bathing machine and Morgan Giles built boats, will be able to be displayed for the first time. We have long been concerned about the lack of disabled access in the old premises. The new building will provide us with a lift and also a set of more user-friendly stairs giving easy access to all. We will also have the space needed to provide facilities essential for a modern tourist attraction such as toilets and an attractive retail area.
The new annexe, which will open next year, will also be designed to contain a multi- purpose community space. This can be used for events such as workshops, exhibitions or lectures. It will be available for use by other community groups, filling a much-needed void in the town. This facility will be invaluable to us when hosting educational visits by schools or societies. Formerly school groups had to sit in a very cramped area on the floor.
