first Viscount Exmouth, Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, a Cornishman. Two cannon from the 1816 siege of Algiers stand sentinel. Pellew worked his way up in the Royal Navy as a frigate captain, later commanding squadrons in the Far East and the Mediterranean.
