Ukabam Honored by Minnesota Black Women Lawyers Network

Ugo Ukabam, an attorney with Gray Plant Mooty’s Employment & Labor Law practice group, was honored in 2009 by the Minnesota Black Women Lawyers Network with the organization’s first annual Achievement Award. The award is given to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of courage and leadership, epitomizes the highest goals and traditions of the profession, and advances opportunities for women within the legal profession.

A 2002 graduate of the William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Ugo continues to serve her alma mater as a member of the college’s Diversity committee and as a mentor to law students. Ugo also cochairs the Hennepin County Bar Association’s Diversity committee and is active in the Igbo Women League of Minnesota. The latter is an organization committed to unifying, educating, and promoting the socio-cultural and economic development of area Igbo women, while improving the lives of women and children in Nigeria.

Diversity Speaker Series

Now in its fifth year, the Gray Plant Mooty Diversity Speakers Series is an initiative in which community leaders speak to firm attorneys, staff, and guests in an effort to build cultural awareness and enhance understanding about the role diversity plays in society.

February 2009

Tom Johnson, a Gray Plant Mooty attorney, spoke about his experience working on The Racial Disparity Initiative. This initiative, launched by the Council on Crime and Justice, was a multi-year project designed to use research, demonstration, and advocacy to drive public policy changes addressing racial disparities in Minnesota’s justice system. Tom led the Council on Crime and Justice for nine years before returning to Gray Plant Mooty in 2008, and he tapped that experience to share observations about working in a highly diverse environment.

Award-winning photographer Wing Young Huie spoke at this event, which celebrated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. While he received international

attention for Lake Street USA,

which transformed six miles of a well-known Minneapolis thoroughfare into a remarkable public art project, Wing is also well regarded for his dynamic slide and video lectures that reflect the complex socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural realities of American society. By showing photographs from his various large bodies of work, including

Nine Months in America: An Ethnocentric Tour, Wing explained

his process of interacting and building trust with the thousands of people he has photographed.

As CEO of People Incorporated, a nonprofit organization providing services to people with mental illness, Dr. Tim Burkett knows how the disease affects the broader community. But, with a sister affected by schizophrenia and a brother lost to suicide, he also understands the personal struggles mental illness can create. During this presentation, he shared his thoughts on mental illness, with special focus on how it can be better understood in today’s workplace.
