Everybody Wins!
As part of this Twin Cities literacy initiative, Gray Plant Mooty attorneys and staff provided weekly one-on-one reading help to students at the Marcy Open School in Minneapolis. Over a 20-week period, 37 volunteers from the firm were assigned a 1st or 2nd grade student to whom they read over the lunch hour. Many relationships were formed and the students really enjoyed their reading buddies!
Gray Plant Mooty employees in Minneapolis and Washington, DC, also participated in a book drive for the National Day of Service. The books collected in Minneapolis were donated to the Marcy school.
Hats for Hope
After a Gray Plant Mooty employee underwent chemotherapy treatment for cancer several years ago, one of her colleagues began knitting hats to help combat the emotional and physical challenges of hair loss. That symbolic effort has blossomed into Gray Plant Mooty’s “Hats for Hope” program, which now includes nearly 80 employees who sew, knit, and crochet attractive and comfortable head coverings for chemotherapy patients. As a result of this program, through 2009, over 20,000 hats have been donated to 42 cancer treatment facilities in Minnesota, Iowa, and North Dakota.
Jeremiah Program
Gray Plant Mooty has provided significant pro bono legal counsel and volunteer support to this organization, which assists single mothers in completing their education and achieving economic self-sufficiency. On Tuesday evenings, single mothers participate in life-skills workshops. Volunteers cook a meal for the mothers and their children, then assist with child care while the mothers participate in the workshop. Teams from Gray Plant Mooty volunteered on several Tuesday evenings during 2009.
Hearts & Hammers
In coordination with Twin Cities Heart & Hammers— a volunteer organization that rehabilitates homes for low-income, disabled, and senior citizens—a team of 34 Gray Plant Mooty volunteers helped a local homeowner in St. Paul on a Saturday afternoon in May 2009 by painting, landscaping, and building a new patio for her home.
Cristo Rey Work-Study Program
In 2009, Gray Plant Mooty partnered with the Cristo Rey Network, which provides a faith-based college preparatory education to economically challenged young people in urban communities. Administered through the local Hire4Ed program, students attend school four days each week, then work in a corporate office on the fifth day to help pay for their education. Gray Plant Mooty hosted two teenage students through this initiative, helping them learn basic job skills critical to future success.
