Temecula Celebrates Ronald Reagan’s Birthday
By Bethany Rogers
Jelly Bellies, Ronald Reagan and the Sports Park
What do Jelly Bellies and a sports park in Temecula have in common? The answer
is: America’s 40th president, Ronald Reagan. Every year, Temecula comes together
with Jelly Belly to celebrate Reagan’s birthday on February 6th. Friends of Ronald
Reagan Sports Park has dubbed the first week in February “Jelly Belly Week”.
Reagan’s love affair with Jelly Bellies is well known. The influential president began
eating jelly beans to counteract a pipe-smoking habit in the early ‘60s. He kept a crystal
jar of them on his desk and passed them around at cabinet meetings. He was fond of
saying, “You can tell a lot about a fella’s character by whether he picks out all of one
color or just grabs a handful.” In honor of his presidential inauguration, the blueberry
Jelly Belly was created. This new flavor was part of a very patriotic three and a half
tons of Jelly Bellies that were shipped to Washington D.C. for the occasion.
