rage picks for great curry
Thai
Panang Curry from Taste of Thai
at 527 University Ave.
Taste of Thai known for its reasonable prices
and generous portions, owes part of it’s success
over the past 20 odd years not only to it’s delicious
dishes, but its prime position at the very heart of the happening restaurant
neighborhood of Hillcrest. One of its most popular dishes is the panang
curry, a combination of coconut milk, green beans, bell pepper and sweet
& spicy curry sauce. The dish is prepared with your choice of beef, chicken,
pork, duck, seafood or vegetarian.
Mambo Mambo Chicken from Amarin Thai Cuisine at 3843 Richmond
Street.
Another Thai favorite in Hillcrest is this quaint and charming eatery
which serves up many traditional favorites along with several creative and
innovative flourishes. The Mambo Mambo Chicken is a house specialty
and crowd favorite. Served in a Thai golden pot, this dish consists of deli-
cious stewed chicken and ripe mango in a spicy red curry sauce.
Indian
Prawns with Curry from India Palace
at 694 University Ave.
Don’t let the American strip mall exterior fool
you, once inside this ornately decorated “palace,”
you will feel instantly transported to Delhi itself.
One of the many delicacy items at this popular Indian eatery in Hillcrest is
the fresh cooked prawns which come sautéed in a zesty Indian curry sauce
and are served with classic plain Basmati rice.
Japanese
Menchi Katsu with Curry From Curry House
at 3860 Convoy St.
It’s good to know that not all Japanese food
is served raw and that those who are not fans of
sushi have other options available. Curry has
been very popular in the land of the rising sun for
over a century now; however you don’t have to travel overseas for a good
representation of it. Curry House in Kearney Mesa offers a wide variety of
curry creations including their famous Menchi Katsu. This breaded and
deep fried beef hamburger cutlet is presented with the house curry sauce
and your choice of white, brown or pilaf rice.
Afghan
Lamb Curry from Khyber Pass
at 523 University Ave.
This is one of the few restaurants in the San
Diego area offering traditional Afghani cuisine. A
bit more on the upscale side, this establishment features casually elegant
and colorful décor reflecting Afghanistan’s history. In case you aren’t that
familiar, many traditional Afghan dishes contain flavors influenced by
Mediterranean and Indian cooking. A popular customer pick at Khyber
Pass is the Lamb Mushroom. Chunks of lamb along with fresh mushrooms
are sauteed and cooked in a creamy curry sauce and accompanied with
imported Basmati rice .
