Peter Doherty
Grace/Wasteland
It’s back to the music in a big way for Peter Doherty as he flies solo for his new CD
called Grace/Wasteland set for release on March 24. The bad boy of The Libertines
and Babyshambles presents a stripped down and seductive trip of songs. The
production by Stephen Smith who has produced The Smiths and Cranberries is
zeroed in the balladeer quality of Doherty’s voice and the fine-tuned strumming
of guitarist Graham Coxon. There is a definite melancholy mood throughout the
first several songs of times gone by. Track four called “A Little Death Around the
Eyes” is lushly wrapped around a string arrangement that tinges with remorse
and is beautifully done.
But has Doherty mellowed? Not if the song called “Through the Looking
Glass” is any indication. The song has a slamming psychedelic beat and deca-
dent lyrics and the sound is almost reminiscent of The Kinks or The Beatles
of the later 1960s. Then, this chameleon steps out in a ragtime and rakish
way with a jazzy little thing called “Sweet By and By.” While on “Sheep Skin
Tearaway,” he blends his vocals with singer Dot Allison and the results
are soft, sentimental and sad all at the same time. This is no in-and-out
musical journey as there are 13 songs presented on Grace/Wasteland. This
mixture of fury, longing and poetry in motion of the past escalates into a passion-
ate sense of aloneness with “Broken Love Song.” Doherty’s skills as a songwriter
really shine throughout… giving the listener a true feeling that this gentleman is
a true romantic at heart, though a touch tragic as well. Is this grace or a wasteland?
Peter Doherty does a remarkable job of pointing out both sides of the spectrum
on his very first solo set of material.
