The Musical Chicanery of The Threepenny Opera
Can a musical play that was written over 80 years ago still fire the heart and
musical passion of audiences today? When it is The Threepenny Opera with time-
less music written by Kurt Weill and lyrics and book by Bertolt Brecht…it seems
a well-told story of criminals, beggars and whores still resonates regardless of
its age. The San Diego Repertory Theatre is venturing into the neighborhood
of seedy Soho from March 6 through March 29 as this one-of-a-kind musical of
corruption takes the stage. As the Rep is the third largest professional theatre
in San Diego, be prepared for a top-notch production at The Lyceum Theatre in
Horton Plaza. The story unfolds with the doomed love affair of Macheath, crimi-
nal supreme, and Polly Peachum, the deceptively sweet daughter of a successful
businessman who trades in human misery and controls London’s beggars. The
Threepenny Opera is packed to the brim with betrayals, schemes, revenge and
reversals of fortune all to the beat of Weill’s memorable score. The cast of this
production is a who’s who of Broadway, REP and film and television faces for this
much-acclaimed work tells the story of an upstanding Mormon couple reeling
final presentation of their 33rd season. Jeffrey Meek (Celebration of the Lizard)
from the recent suicide of their gay son and how the two become stuck between
stars as Mackie and Lyle Kanous (Big River) plays Jonathan Peachum with Lisa
