sheltered reef where he assured us the fishing was just as good, but the water less choppy.

“We didn’t need any previous knowledge as he showed us how to thread our bait and cast our line. We were instructed not to land any fish until he had checked them in case we caught anything poisonous. “I was disappointed when our lovely captain showed us some excellent pictures of fish – one hundred times bigger than ours – which he had caught recently. However, the weather couldn’t be helped and Chris was right to come here. And while our fish were small, they were beautifully coloured, and it’s always a buzz to catch any fish.”

ROWING.

Kristy Flay, customer operations executive at The Adventure Company, says: “This was tradi- tional Maltese rowing with the Marsa Regatta Club and the first time that the rowers had shared their sport with anyone outside of their club/Malta, es- pecially with women, as it is traditionally only for men.

in fact the name of the company that offers go-karting in Ta’ Qali. “It was terrific fun, too. It’s definitely a ‘boys thing’ but the girls also loved it and were just as competitive. We could hear screams of delight coming from their cars from time to time.

“After a five-minute warm up, we were placed on the grid to start the race. Once the chequered flag fell, there followed 20 minutes of pure excitement, adrenalin rushes, spins, turns, bumps and much overtaking, which finally decided the results. There was even a podium where cups were presented to the winner, and second and third places.

“For those people that are slightly shorter, extra padding is provided for the seats so they can reach the pedals, making this a great activity to recommend to families.”

“We gathered on the waterfront in Valletta where some of the rowers were welcoming – others were a little more hesitant! “We paired up with others in our group and then joined two members of the Marsa Regatta Club in a boat, which is specially designed and weighted for the sport. Once in the boat, two rowers stood facing the other, seated, pair. Everyone took one oar each, but those that are standing push the oar rather than pull it. We quickly learned that synchronisation is important, especially if you want to stay in your boat!

“After practising, we were challenged to a series of timed races, with semi finals and a final – and even a winners’ presentation. “Currently there are only seven rowing clubs that are preserving this sporting tradition, however, efforts are being made to encourage more interest locally and internationally. If they open it up to tourists, I would definitely recommend the activity to sporty clients who are interested in Maltese culture and are keen to meet the locals.”

Marie Pollard, sales consultant at Travel Republic, shares her views on Air Malta, the Calypso Hotel and the Palace Hotel

AIR MALTA “I have sold Air Malta in the past but since it’s not an airline I have flown with before, I have never recommended it as I always prefer to suggest something that I have done myself. “However, I will definitely recommend it

now. Check-in was quick, the aircraft was spacious enough to be comfortable, the food was good and the staff friendly.”

CALYPSO HOTEL, GOZO “I had a clean and comfortable twin, sea-view room. There was air conditioning, and a ceiling fan for when it’s not so hot and you want to stay cool but not freeze! “The bathroom was clean, with a power- ful shower over the bath, and a hairdryer was provided. “The restaurant served up excellent food and there was a good choice. The roof-top terrace had some amazing views and the pool looked very inviting.

THE PALACE HOTEL, MALTA “The rooms in this five-star grand boutique hotel looked amazing. The beds were large singles and comfortable. There were tea/coffee-making facilities, the hairdryer was powerful and the TV offered a good choice of channels. “The onsite spa also had a wonderful

range of treatments and an easy appoint- ment system. There were two pools: one on the rooftop and an indoor pool, plus sauna and steam room in the adjoining four-star Victoria hotel. The gym also offers the use of a personal trainer. Overall, staff were friendly and made us feel welcome.”
