With customers counting their pennies this
year, holidays in the Balkans have a fresh
appeal. Dave Richardson outlines top spots
BULGARIA.
The Black Sea resorts have been transformed over the
last decade and now offer a quality family holiday, as
well as the lowest prices in Europe for spending on
meals, drinks and entertainment.
The 230-mile coast has many fine sandy beaches,
some with Blue Flag awards for cleanliness, and most
are gently shelving so are good for young children.
A three-course meal with bottle of wine costs
around £10, while a bottle of beer is about £1.20.
Cheap designer clothes, leather goods and jewellery
are available.
The largest and most lively resort is Sunny Beach. It
boasts a five-mile sandy stretch with Blue Flag status,
and a buzzing promenade of shops, restaurants and
bars.
Close by is the Unesco-protected old town of
Golden Sands in Bulgaria boasts a long promenade and lots of watersport facilities
