‘FIGHTIN’ WORDS There are words that, unbeknownst to us, can cause another person’s defenses to rise. Years ago, it was “Whatever!” with a shrug of the shoulders and a roll of the eyes. For some people it’s the word “again” that is interpreted to mean “like I told you before,” or “I already told you this — did you forget?!” Others that top the list (from my clients) are:


• “But ...” or “Yeah, but...” • “Yeah, right...” or “yeah, yeah” • “It’s not my job/responsibility...” • “And...?”


• “What’s your question?” or “So, what’s your question?”


• “You didn’t tell me!” Granted, the words themselves


are not irritating or condescending; it’s the manner in which they are said (including voice tone and body language) that can quickly irritate or annoy someone else.


AVOIDING


MISUNDERSTANDINGS There is no guarantee that what you said is what they heard. Something could be a common interpretation or defi nition for you and those you associate with. However, when dealing with the diverseness of our industry, nothing should be taken for granted. There are several ways to clarify your words and your intentions:


1. Quantify whenever possible. “Give me 10 minutes” or “Friday the twentieth” is much clearer than the examples previously noted.


2. Instead of words such as usually or frequently, state in real terms. Saying things like, “four out of every fi ve times” or “two to three times per week” paints a much clearer picture.
