for the 300 coming up in Dallas. Hayes was able to get them hired just in time to attend. Ebersol and Shelton spent their fi rst days on the job at Bombardier’s training facility in Dallas. They met each other at the training course and became friends quickly.
TEAMWORK Going back to my 300 reference at the beginning of this story, the Spartans introduced a fi ghting technique called the Phalanx — a close formation where they worked as a team to assault their enemies.
Within this formation, no soldier was superior to another. They worked together as one for a common goal. Likewise, Hayes believes working as a team toward a common goal is important. His focus on hiring the right people who would be a good fi t within the team has paid off , and the three of them are a close working team. To help foster this team culture, Hayes had to tweak his focus when he transitioned from being a mechanic to being chief of maintenance. “When I was a mechanic, I always strived to be the best at everything I did,” says Hayes. “That has been my personality throughout my life. Everything has to be perfect. But I knew I needed to change my mentality as chief of maintenance. The reality was I had to stop looking through the paper towel roll and start looking at the big picture. Although I still worked hard on being the best I could be, my more important role was now to do what I could do to make my team the best it can be — how can I help Carter and Garrett be the best they can be? How can I help them be the future ‘supertechs’ that this industry needs? I do whatever I can do to help them. I support their training and what Harley-Davidson needs as a company. Some managers may think they are the spotlights in their maintenance organizations. In my eyes, Carter and Garrett are the spotlight. I’m here to support them in every way I can. Without them, I couldn’t do what I need to do.” Hayes says it is the same mentality
throughout the company. “For us to thrive as a Part 91 operation, we all need to be on the same page,” he says. “We all work closely together. I am a huge believer of teamwork. Our mechanics are just as important as our pilots. There is no room for an ‘us vs. them’ mentality here. We are one big team riding in one direction.”
