Bud was also employed at Loud Engineering, which made landing gear parts for bombers. At the end of WWII, Lance Loud sold his factory to Bud who continued to make aircraft parts in his newly formed, B.H. Hadley Company. Bud’s company also made parts for motorcycles which may have been the result of a friendship with racing enthusiast, Joe Petrali, known to be a “mechanical wizard” who had once worked for Howard Hughes. While operating his manufacturing


business in Pomona, Bud fi led eleven patents for a wide variety of mechanical parts including those for a Drilling Machine, a Diaphragm Valve, and Shrapnel packaging – which was a method for packing small metal pieces around anti-aircraft rounds that increased the radius of the blast. By the mid 1950s, Bud and his


wife, Jo, had four children and his business had entered the Space Age by manufacturing cryogenic valves for Atlas rockets. In the 1960s Bud took over Schwien Engineering which manufactured manometers. His son, Bob, recalls that Schwien “was a family business – all of us kids worked there at one point.”

WWII, Bud remained true to his plan for a career in aviation while remaining close to those he loved. Bud raised his family in Pomona, where he continued to be an active member of his community. Bud Hadley died in 1997, just


miles from where he was born. His mechanical skills, passion for aviation, and sense of community continue within his sons Bob and Jim. Bob has built kit aircraft and remains a private pilot. Jim is now President of Schwien Engineering.
