Uganda is poised to launch its first overseas marketing campaign in a bid to increase tourist numbers to more than two million by 2025.
Specialist marketing agency Kamageo will be responsible for engaging with the travel trade on behalf of Uganda to increase tourism from the UK and Ireland. A fam trip programme is being planned along with Uganda- themed events around the UK to educate the trade about the types of holidays Uganda offers.
An online training programme
WILDLIFE: Uganda has a wealth of wildlife in its 10 national parks
for tour operators – which will ‘filter out’ to agents – is in development to inform the industry about Uganda’s lesser- known attractions. The agency said Uganda is a “serious competitor” to other eastern and southern African countries because of its wildlife, culture and 10 national parks. Tim Henshall, Kamageo’s managing director, said: “As well as its world-famous mountain gorillas, the country has a wealth of national parks, an abundance of wildlife, incredible lakes and waterways including the Nile, truly outstanding birding and a wide range of adventure activities.”
Kamageo said “key” tour
operators that work with travel agents, such as Cox & Kings, African Pride and Somak, would be fully trained to provide information and support. The agency describes Uganda as
having been peaceful for more than 10 years and “well-equipped” for independent travellers and groups. Uganda believes tourism, which accounts for 8% of its GDP, could also help conserve its natural resources, including flora and fauna, and its communities. Agents who would like more
information should contact Kirstine Vercoe by emailing
kirstine@kamageo.com.
