A star of our trade: John Harding remembered
Story: Former Abta president John Harding passes away Very sorry to hear of John’s death. In the Travelscene v Cresta ‘wars’ of 20 years ago, he was a worthy opponent. I once spent a week in Canada on a tourist board fam trip with him and he was a warm and witty travelling companion. He and Keith Byrne [former Cresta head of sales] will be swapping travel banter from neighbouring clouds.
JANE WILLIAMS former marketing director, Cresta Holidays
John did so much good for travel and his passion for generating short breaks was endless. I have so many happy memories of John and all he brought to our industry.
RICK TUPPER GROUP
I worked with John on many projects, including on several Abta committees. He was quite simply a star in our industry.

QUOTE OF THE
WEEK Heathrow expansion is unaffordable
Story: Business leaders dismayed by MPs’ bid to delay decision Heathrow expansion is unaffordable, unsustainable and undeliverable. The CBI and others will make billions but they all expect taxpayers to pay £20 billion-plus in infrastructure costs and Heathrow passengers to pay £18.6 billion for expansion. The CBI and London First are subsidy junkies with no thought of deadly air pollution and noise suffering.

TWEETS THIS WEEK
Gemma Antrobus @LuxuryTravelGem Today it is #TravelAgentAppreciationDay in the US. How come we don’t have one in the UK?
Emma Savage @TCEmmaSavage The Canadian dollar has hit a 13 yr low, so you’ll get a lot for your money over there. Go now!
Katie McGonagle @katie_mcgonagle Picked a good night to come to #Jackson #Wyoming for the annual dog sledding race (and snow!) with @TauckAgent
“Does the delay mean we lack the evidence for a convincing decision? Absolutely not. We’re making the
case for new capacity even more watertight”

In response to Steve Kane: You are of course aware that some of the price variation is due to exchange rates, not to mention demand and fiscal planning. That said, we independents do fight for our customers; the problem is that the big operators dominate and push competition out. PETERF

End this blatant price-hike rip-off
Story: Families struggling to afford holidays, claim agents The travel industry should end its blatant price hiking. I tracked one operator’s holiday in Cala Bona, Majorca, for March 4, half board for two adults for 11 nights: over a period of six days it was on sale for £639 on the first day, £1,060 on the second day, down to £956 the next and £684 a day later. Yet this holiday will have been priced 12 months in advance with the hotel group Protur. Customers are being ripped off. I urge independent agents to start sticking up for the customer and say a big fat no to the operators. STEVE KANE
