From the fi rst day on snow in the magnifi cent mountain valley that ringed the 20-km ski trail in Ushuaia, nordic-minded Interski attendees began to realize that there was a thriving cross country ski community. An Italian Demo Team member, Giuseppe Cottrer, had bright-eyed reunions with two of the local women whom he had trained and raced with in international biathlon competitions. Each day we skied through the woods to a diff erent trailside restaurant, sipping tiny coff ees and stomping the snow off our boots before sitting down to fresh Patagonian lamb.

on the fi nal night, the Cornejo family invited the entire cross country delegation to an asado, or a barbeque. Attendees from Australia, Finland, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy, Argentina and the U.S. all gathered for a generous feast that lasted late into the night. The patriarch of the family spoke at length and his son acknowledged that his parents built their family around skiing; to have this unexpected gathering of international ski instructors meant the world to them. Tears fl owed, and as we left, Oula-Matti from Finland said, “I have been to six Interskis, and not until tonight have I understood the true Interski Family.”
