How long have you been instructing? 28 years. I became an associate (now Level I) after my fi rst year and learned so much.

What the biggest challenge you face in your job? T e hiring and recruiting part of the job is the hardest, though we’ve been lucky enough to get PSIA-AASI instructors from across the nation to work with us. It’s valuable to us to have snow pros who have certifi cations because it provides a platform and a standard from which we can work from and operate.

What are the ideal qualities you look for in a ski or snowboard instructor? Ideal qualities for an instructor are tied to their ability to make relationships. We have an opportunity to create memorable experiences with our guests and get them coming back for more. If we have an instructor who can teach students all they want/need to know, and on top of that help create a skier and rider who feels connected to and comfortable with the ski and ride culture, we’re doing well.

What qualities do you value in your instructors that have PSIA-AASI certifi cations? We appreciate that PSIA-AASI members have the ability to put the student fi rst. T ey know how to teach, how to build relationships, and how to make sure the guest has a great experience.

Do you encourage or facilitate instructors to become PSIA-AASI members if they aren’t already? When we bring in new-hires who are inexperienced – whether they’re alpine, snowboard, or adaptive instructors – we encourage them to become a PSIA-AASI member and get connected with the Rocky Mountain Division here for certifi cation. We strive to get them engaged with the organization and learn about what opportunities are available within PSIA-AASI.
