Story: Group of northern Labour MPs signs letter backing Heathrow expansion It’s not only the northeast that would benefit, it’s the whole nation. We can’t be a world-leading economy with second-rate airports. Heathrow is a global brand which should be capitalised on.

I’m not sure how concentrating all the nation’s infrastructure developments in the southeast will do anything to help the northeast. In fact, it will do the opposite. The demise of Virgin’s Little Red operation shows that the regional passenger is now giving Heathrow a wide berth, preferring to transfer in Dubai and Amsterdam, among others.

Talk Back: ‘It’s time we charged a fee for quotes’ (October 29) To fee or not to fee, this comes up regularly. I have said many times that agents should charge a fee, but not just for a quote. Agents should charge an upfront fee for their expertise at researching a trip, and this fee should be separate to the booking. Clients have taken my suggestions and booked elsewhere, but they were happy as they had the details they needed, and I was happy as I still got paid.

As an independent retail agent for 26 years, we have seen Virgin Holidays, Tui, Thomas Cook, Kuoni and Titan, among others, steal our business by actively courting travellers with direct discounting and deliberately securing as much direct business as possible. We built those businesses for them. Some business- class passengers with home pick-ups were corresponded with on their return to book direct next time from these direct-sell companies. I welcome change and we did change: we now work closely with a small core of about 10 product suppliers, all trade-orientated, such as Jetset, Indus and 1st Class Holidays. Ten years ago we could foresee the current situation and we changed our business model. I hope that others follow, but I doubt it. ROGER BLIZARD
