manoeuvre the sacks in a different way from most of the range, picking them up by the bottom and peeling them off the stack rather than picking up the top of the bag. This ensures that bags which have a tendency to stick together can be handled more effectively.

AFFORDABLE AGV SOLUTION FOR MID- SIZED COMPANIES


JBT has launched an automatic guided vehicle (AGV) system designed specifically for mid-sized companies that is lower cost than fully automated alternatives, more productive than manual or semi-automated solutions and can be delivered and installed in less time and with less support than traditional systems. The JayBoT AGV will make its UK debut at this year’s PPMA show. JBT developed the AGV for operations that currently use up to four manual fork-lift trucks and are just starting to automate material movement. Direct two-way communication and

FANUC UK has expanded its M-710iC series of industrial robots with the introduction of the M-710iC/45M, a mid-sized, high speed robot with a long reach. With a 45kg payload and reach of over 2.6 metres, the M-710iC/45M presents a smaller and more cost effective alternative to many large palletising robots – potentially 12%-15% reduction in robot price. The robot’s application space extends


to product handling and pick and place tasks where its long reach renders it the ideal choice for produce collation functions bridging between out-feed and packing conveyors. Launched at PPMA 2015, this is one of four FANUC robots completing picking, collating, packing and palletising tasks on the stand. At PPMA 2015 the M-710iC/45M robot will collate


shingle-fed produce packs and load them into a shelf-ready carton. The system will feature a tilted end effector handling packs of noodles. To show how packs can be taken from a horizontal to a vertical shelf-ready position the packs will shoot off the end of a conveyor into the end effector which lowers until several packs are stacked one on top of the other. The end effector then moves to a horizontal position, presenting the packs in an upright collation for loading into a box or shelf-ready tray. Palletising and depalletising are expected to be


massive application areas for the M-710iC/45M owing to the space and cost saving potential that arises from a medium payload coupled with extended reach and high cycle speeds (1350/hour). In designing the M-710iC/45M, FANUC’s


engineers have built a six-axis, IP67 certified articulated arm with best in class reach and the ability to stack pallets as high as 1.89m - all on a compact 535x550mm footprint. Floor, wall, angle and ceiling mounting options add to its flexibility.

decision-making capability are incorporated into the actual vehicle, allowing JayBoT AGVs to communicate with each other and other equipment without the need for a system manager. This reduces the complexity of the installation, making the JayBoT AGV much less costly and easier to install. The JayBoT AGV’s on-board intelligence


allows it to navigate independently on predefined ‘roads’ with a 360-degree ‘safe zone’ around the vehicle (including warning and stop zones) to protect pedestrians, other mobile vehicles and equipment. The vehicle is capable of very precise manoeuvring including the type of positioning needed for servicing racks, stands and other locations. Designed to maximise productivity and


profitability, the JayBoT communicates directly with input/output sensors and PLCs to support movement, automatically charge batteries and receive orders to move loads. It uses decentralised control for simple A to B movements for 1-4 vehicles but can be upgraded to a centralised design (with a system manager) for integrated, highly optimised fleets - ideal for companies in the middle segment who want to test automation in smaller applications before proceeding with large installations.
