BALPPA Summer Meeting T
Members enjoy rollercoaster ride of Northern Ireland! See you in Blackpool?
BALPPA will stage its Autumn Conference, following a similar format to the Summer Meeting, on September 22 and 23. Based at Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Big Blue Hotel, the event will include a charity golf day n Tuesday, together with a visit to Blackpool Tower. There will be dinner at the hotel the same evening followed by a tour of the illuminations, and then a members meeting and tour of the Pleasure Beach on Wednesday. More details on the BALPPA website.
he British Association of Amusement Parks, Piers and Attractions (BALPPA) staged its annual Summer Meeting in
Northern Ireland last month, taking in a variety of attractions from Belfast right up to the Antrim coast
After a day of golf day on Tuesday, June 2, members assembled at the Hilton Templepatrick hotel just north of the capital for various meetings before enjoying dinner, drinks and entertainment. An early start on Wednesday saw the bus leave the hotel at 8.30 for a packed programme starting with a stop at the Old Bushmills Distillery, because it’s never too early for a whisky. Next it was the short ride over to the Giant’s Causeway and a pleasant but steep walk down to the unique rock formations that bring tourists flocking to this National Trust. A 8-mile (13km) journey down the road to Portush gave passengers chance to admire the beautiful coastline on what was a stunning summer’s day (not to be taken for granted in Ireland!) Here members

enjoyed lunch in a restaurant overlooking the harbour courtesy of Moser’s Rides and the Trufelli family at Barry’s Amusements. A visit to Barry’s, an immaculate indoor-outdoor facility that opens for just over 100 days a year, followed, complete with a presentation from park historian NAME TO FOLLOW. While some sampled attractions such as the park’s “Big Dipper” (Pinfari looping coaster), others enjoyed an ice cream. For many, however, the most exhilarating ride of the day was the coach, as the bus driver navigated the country roads with the urgency of a racehorse in order to keep to schedule! A tour of Belfast’s Titanic museum and a three-course dinner in its well appointed ballroom (complete with replica Titanic staircase) rounded off the evening, after which there was the obligatory late night visit to an Irish pub (or two). For those still knocking around on Thursday there was a ride over to the We Are Vertigo FEC, plus the option of tickets to either Belfast Zoo or Crumlin Road Gaol.
