dp-BioCote Quartz used in The World’s first Antimicrobial Classroom
d
p-BioCote Quartz has been established within the dp-décor portfolio of products
for some months now. This revolutionary sheet material is currently available in six decors – three popular woodgrains, Beech, Oak, and Maple and thee solid colours, White, Ivory, and Pale Grey. As well as offering high resistance to abrasion, far exceeding the abrasion resistance of high pressure worktops, one of the most significant properties of the material is the inclusion of the antibacterial additive from BioCote that gives up to a 99.9% germ free surface*. The product is becoming popular within a wide
range of market sectors that can gain benefits from such properties but to gain first hand real time data the world’s first ever antimicrobrial classroom has been created at a primary school in the UK, resulting in huge reductions in levels of bacteria. Working in conjunction with BioCote Ltd and other users of BioCote® technology Decorative Panels have used the dp-BioCote Quartz product to create the classroom that actively inhibits the growth of harmful microbes. dp-BioCote Quartz sheet material and
edgebanding was used to manufacture computer desks, work tables, and bookcases for the classroom. All other fixtures and fittings were provided by other BioCote® partners to create a safer, more hygienic learning environment. Levels of bacteria were measured over a period of
time on the surfaces of products. Simultaneously, data was collected from comparable but untreated items in another classroom. Comparison of the levels of bacteria in these two classrooms revealed a dramatic difference. Initial findings were impressive – the antimicrobial
products in the protected classroom were shown to be over 95.68% less contaminated with bacteria than the corresponding items in the unprotected classroom. With Government guidelines recommending
schools prevent the spread of infections by maintaining a clean environment it is easily seen how
BioCote® treated products can contribute enormously to this aim. The study will continue throughout the academic
year and further data will be collected by the BioCote® team with the aim of understanding if levels of contamination vary due to seasonality, the identity of the microbes recovered and what potential antimicrobial technology has for reducing absenteeism due to sickness. dp-BioCote Quartz is a sheet material that has much to offer over an array of market areas. The
potential for cleaner safer environments from furniture manufacturer from a traditional sheet material is now a reality. For more information please contact Decorative
