UPM Raflatac celebrates 40 years in business
UPM Raflatac, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of self- adhesive label stock, is celebrating 40 years’ history as a company. The story began in Tampere, Finland, where chemist Juhani Strömberg, working for paper converting company Raf. Haarla, set out to develop water-based alternatives to solvent- based adhesives. Water-based label technology, which was still a rarity in the 1970s, was a significant advancement in enabling higher speeds on printing machinery and greater efficiency for label production. Strömberg’s innovations were also a major step towards the sustainable production methods and label materials to which UPM Raflatac remains strongly committed today. Growth and internationalisation started at the end of the 1970s, and UPM Raflatac has since continued its rapid advancement on the global self-adhesive label stock market. Today, the company employs nearly 3,000 professionals and sales exceed one billion euros. The company has 11 production facilities worldwide and offers thousands of solutions for continually growing needs in product and information labelling. UPM Raflatac’s success is based on an implementation of strategy, active research and development and the resources of a world-class forest industry company. An
additional strength is the Raflatouch – the way employees operate and work with people both internally and externally. “At Raflatac, a strong sense of presence has
been retained for the company’s history and its founders,” said executive vice president, Tapio Kolunsarka. “New has been built from the foundation of the old. Entrepreneurship has shown itself particularly at times of change, when a strategic determination and shared goal have led to success. “As employees, we are mindful that Raflatac is under our temporary custodianship, and that it is our duty to pass on to future generations an increasingly strong and successful company. As proud as we are, we’re even more excited about the future and what we can offer both to our employees and customers in years to come.”
The SAM Group opens its Solution Coating Technical Centre
The SAM Group is scheduled to open SAMLab 3 - Solution Coating Technical Centre at its headquarters in South Korea by the end of this year. This expansion will be in addition to SAM's two other existing technical centres, SAMLab 1 - Sungan Printed
Electronics Laboratory, located in Korea, and SAMLab 2 - Extrusion Technical Centre, located at SAM North America in Phoenix, New York.
This semi-production facility is designed for customer product development trials and demonstrations, toll coating and solution coating trials. SAM will also conduct internal research and development in order to remain at the leading edge of technology in the coating industry. Don Teich, vice president of solution coating, said: “We decided to locate this pilot facility in Korea because of the need for a line of this type in Asia and our growing solution coating business.” The machine is designed for running water and solvent based, 100 per cent solids, and hot melt coatings with a maximum width of 1,040mm at speeds up to 1,000 metres per minute. The line will have modular coating capabilities of slot die, micro gravure, semi-flexo, five-roll and transfer roll to start. It also includes a 22 metre, seven zone flotation and roll support dryer. Other features of the machine line include automatic turrets at the primary unwind and winder for continuous running, a secondary unwind for wet and dry laminations, corona treatment, web cleaning, steam re-moisturising and UV curing.
