Innovia’s BOPP label film range extension
Innovia’s top-coated BOPP UltraFoil food labels
Innovia Films has produced its first top-coated BOPP label films – UltraFoil CFA (clear) and WFA
(white) – that are proven to be food contact compliant under European Union and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. Product manager labels for Innovia Films, Alasdair McEwen, explains: “The pressure sensitive label value chain is now very much under the spotlight; everyone expects labels to meet the same regulations as traditional food packaging. Until recently, top-coated filmic label-stock materials did not have to meet global regulations for food contact compliance. UltraFoil CFA and WFA top-coated label films are now compliant.” UltraFoil CFA and WFA comply with the applicable EU and US legislations for most applications involving direct contact with food across most food types. The compliance also covers a broad range of food use conditions, such as ambient temperature filling and storage, chilled use, frozen conditions and warm fill. UltraFoil CFA and WFA are designed to give converters a surface allowing outstanding cold-foiling performance and intricate fine tone and vignette printing, without the need to slow down their presses. UltraFoil films maximise the aesthetics of foiled areas of the label giving brand owners’ shelf impact for their products and additional options regarding imagery and branding, without adversely affecting the overall cost of the final printed label. Converters are able to use a top-coated
BOPP label film, with all the benefits that UltraFoil CFA and WFA provide, safe in the knowledge that the films also meet their regulatory needs.

McEwen adds: “With Innovia Films’ renowned worldwide expertise in the fields of labels and regulatory aspects, it is exciting to be able to offer the market high performance, top- coated label facestock films that are food contact compliant. UltraFoil CFA and WFA are the first in a range of coated label films from Innovia offering print and foiling performance, but also satisfying regulatory demands. We are exceeding the needs and wants of our customers and
continually strive to bring new and innovative label films to the market.”
BOPP MINERAL OIL BARRIER FILM RANGE EXTENSION Meanwhile, following Innovia’s extension of its range of BOPP mineral oil barrier films, the company has seen a positive response to its recent launch of Propafilm RCU, its first proprietary acrylic coated BOPP film that has a proven barrier to mineral oil migration for up to one and a half years. Andy Sweetman, marketing manager packaging and sustainability for Innovia Films, comments: “We are currently running over 40 trials across Europe with existing and potential customers. On the back of this successful launch, our R&D team have rapidly accelerated the final stages of development work on a sister product – Propafilm RBCU, a white version.” Propafilm RBCU has all the qualities and benefits of RCU but manufacturers and packers who prefer a solid white film now have an alternative option. Due to its versatility, the chocolate and snack markets are likely to be interested in this product. Sweetman continues: “Our new ‘bubble’ line investment work, which means increased capacity, will come on stream later this year. This allows us to refocus our efforts on our polypropylene range of films. In fact we are also working on another extension to the range – a one side coated variant, designed specifically for laminate applications. Watch this space!”
