program to selections from Spartacus. Taylor’s gutsy performance was inspiring,

McKeever said. She had already competed in two dance events and a short program early in the day, and she didn’t skate her championship senior free skate until 12:30 a.m. Eastern time. “She was exhausted, but she’s such a fierce

competitor,” McKeever said. “Although we were in the lead, we were tight with Dartmouth, with both teams duking it out, one skater after another giving everything they had. “She went out there and you could see it in

her eyes. She was not going to let that moment slip. She was going to seize it. She had worked too hard and you could tell she was going to give everything and she was going to be a national in- tercollegiate champion. It was exciting to see the

emotion, and at the end of that program, knowing how tired all those girls had to be, just that sheer competitiveness and the effort. I was so honored to be her coach; that literally was the moment I knew we were going to be national intercollegiate champions. You could see everyone else step up and seize the opportunity.” Taylor, the 2013 U.S. collegiate senior ladies

bronze medalist, credited her teammates for their applause and support throughout her free skate. “I took their cheering and just used it,” Tay-

lor said. “Every jump, every spin I went into, I heard them cheering and I felt inside like I was doing it for them.” Boston University’s Schuyler Eldridge se-

cured the senior men’s championship free skate crown with his performance to the Eagles’ “Hell

Freezes Over” version of “Hotel California.” “Most of us, including my competitor from UC

Berkeley, Matej Silecky, are choreographing our own programs. Consequently, you see a lot of very emo- tive, personal performances,” Eldridge said. “During my amateur competitive days, my coach, Slavka Ko- hout Button, and choreographer, Allen Schramm, used to emphasize that programs should tell a story, and I tried to express the feeling of confusion, disil- lusionment and, ultimately, acceptance that the lyrics already communicate so well. Beyond that, it was just nice to have a clean skate with a pair of double Axels, triple Salchows and triple toe loops.” Dartmouth’s Caroline Knoop captured the ju-

nior ladies championship free skate title, while the University of Delaware’s Jonathan Jerothe nabbed the junior men’s championship free skate crown.
