ta,” a piece she used to win this event four years ago, Yacomes completed two Level 4 spins and earned 29.04 components points, en route to a to- tal score of 59.90. Te gold marks Yacomes’ third title in this category, adding to the golds she won in 2011 and 2014. She took home silver in 2012 and 2013.

Competing at her first U.S. Adult Champi-

onships, Janey Busch of the Pueblo FSC won the silver medal with 54.14 points, less than a point ahead of bronze medalist Natalie Shaby of the All Year FSC.

“I want to show my students that it doesn’t

matter how you place; finding your love of the sport is what really matters,” Busch, a skating coach and project engineer, explained. “Tat’s what drives me. It’s not about being the best, it’s about loving being out there.” Skating to “Moonlight” by Te Piano Guys, Busch completed three double-double jump com-

binations, including a double loop-double loop worth a program-high 4.02 points. Shaby earned 53.60 points for her efforts to stand on the podium in this event for the first time since winning silver in 2009. “I’ve always struggled with combinations, so when I hit that opening double flip-double toe, I was ecstatic,” Shaby said. “I popped the first dou- ble Axel and by the time I got to the second one I was feeling tired. But I’ve done 19 marathons. I was not about to miss that jump twice!” Executing four of seven jumping passes in the second half of her “Bridge Over Troubled Wa- ter” performance, Shaby received a highlight dis- tribution bonus on four double jumps for a total element score of 26.96 points. She finished fifth at last year’s championships after placing fourth in 2011 and 2012. Regan Alsup, representing the Detroit SC, earned the pewter medal with 51.97 points.

competitor Daniel Palmeri (Onyx Suburban Skating Academy) opened the men’s marquee event by setting the number to beat: 57.70. “After I skated I waited outside the build-

ing,” Palmeri said. “I couldn’t watch!” Tough he fell on both double Axels, he nailed two triple Salchows to win the title. “I was really nervous after the warm-up, but I said to myself, ‘Go!’ when I heard my name called,” Palmeri said. With Level 4s on two of his three spins, and

the event’s highest components score, Palmeri squeaked out the win over last year’s champion Zachariah Szabo. Palmeri is an accomplished performer who spent six years with Disney on Ice and compet-
