USOC CHIEF LAUDS U.S. FIGURE SKATING’S MISSION ‘WE RELY ON YOU’ T e chief executive offi cer of the United


States Olympic Committee (USOC) opened the 2015 Hilton Governing Council in Colora- do Springs, Colorado, on May 2 by recognizing U.S. Figure Skating’s grassroots programs and coaches for the association’s continued success. “Our (USOC’s) sole job is to help Amer- ican athletes achieve sustained competitive excellence at the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Scott Blackmun, who has served as the organization’s CEO since 2010, said. “T at’s why what you do is so important, because it’s you who are creating our athletes. Meryl (Da- vis) and Charlie (White) didn’t become Olym- pic champions because of anything we did; they became Olympic champions because of the Basic Skills Program and because of the thou- sands of people like you who really believe in the sport of fi gure skating.” T e role of the clubs, he said, is critical in


U.S. Figure Skating’s mission and the success of fi gure skating on the international stage. In contrast, 65 percent of the athletes who competed at the 2012 London Summer Games attended and trained at NCAA institutions.

Members of the Athletes Advisory Committee have some fun at the AAC dinner. “With fi gure skating, we rely on you, we


rely on the clubs and the people who are teach- ing 5- and 6-year-olds how to skate,” Blackmun said. “We understand your mission is much, much broader than ours.” More than 300 delegates from 48 states came to Colorado Springs for the annual Gov- erning Council meeting, presided over by Pres- ident Samuel Auxier at the DoubleTree by Hil- ton World Arena. Auxier opened the afternoon session by


providing an update on three major initiatives that are being implemented by the association. Auxier talked about the progress of a U.S.


Figure Skating brand and image study, a re- branding eff ort of the Basic Skills Program and the status of a new event management system. T e delegates were shown the progress of each of the initiatives on the big video screen, as well as the cost associated with paying for each
