news Milacron moves to IPO

US plastics machinery group Milacron has taken the first step towards an IPO with the filing of a registration state- ment with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The company, which is

owned by CCMP Capital Investors, said it aims to list on the NYSE or NASDAQ market. Share prices have not yet been fixed but the company said proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes, including debt reduction. Milacron was delisted from the NYSE in 2008 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009. The

company was acquired by CCMP in 2012 and since then has made a number of targeted acquisitions, includ- ing Mold-Masters in 2013 and Kortec last year.

Speaking at the NPE show in the US ahead of the IPO announcement, Milacron CTO Bruce Catoen said: “For the past couple of years we have really emphasised innovation. We now have all the pieces to put together something that takes customers from a pellet to a part.”

In its SEC filing, the

company revealed total sales for 2014 of $1.21bn. Plastics

machinery, which includes Ferromatik injection machines, Milacron extruders, Uniloy blow moulding units and aftermarket sales, accounted for 56% of total sales. Melt delivery, which includes Mold-Masters and DME, accounted for 33%. The remaining 11% is made up by its machining fluids division. Around half of Milacron’s

sales are derived from North America and 21% from Europe. The company also points to a high 61% of its global sales coming from less cyclical consumable products. ❙ www.milacron.com

Fraunhofer shows plastic engine

Researchers at Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology have developed a prototype petrol engine with a lightweight cylin- der block produced from carbon fibre reinforced plastic.

The single cylinder engine, which was developed with Sumitomo Bakelite and uses a glass fibre reinforced phenolic resin, was shown at the Hannover Fair this month. “The cylinder casing weighs

around 20% less than the equivalent aluminum compo- nent, and costs the same,” said Dr Lars-Fredrik Berg, leader of Fraunhofer’s Lightweight Powertrain unit. ❙ www.fraunhofer.de

Lanxess invests in Tepex

Lanxess has commissioned a cell for production of long fibre reinforced thermo- plastic composite parts at its Bond Laminates subsidiary at Brilon in Germany.

The Engel cell includes a

130 tonne vertical injection moulding machine with 6-axis robot, sheet pre-heating system, and variothermal mould temperature control. It can produce parts measuring up to 330mm by 280mm. “We plan to use the facil- ity as a platform for transferring technology to customers,” said Ulrich Jecmeniza, applications engineer with Bond Laminates. “We want to familiarise our customers with the strengths of Tepex and how it is processed.” ❙ www.lanxess.com
