product update | Materials FOOD CONTACT Vestamid Terra gains FDA approval

Evonik has received US FDA food contact approval for its Vestamid Terra DS16 PA10,10 bio-based PA polymer. The company has received a

food contact notification (FCN001439) for the Terra DS16 natural grade covering production of articles that will come into contact with all types of food at chilled to elevated room temperatures for single use and up to 100˚C

ADDITIVES Croda aims to cut scratching

UK-based Croda has introduced a new range of low-blooming anti-scratch additives targeted at automotive interior applications. The range includes Incroslip SL and

IncroMold K for use with PP impact copolymers and Incroslip G for PP homopolymers. The additives function by modifying surface friction

TPU Geba protects with new TPU

Germany-based Geba Kunststoffcompounds has teamed up with Bayer MaterialScience to develop the Desmovit DP R CF range of ester-based carbon fibre

Protective applications is a key market for Geba’s new TPU

reinforced TPUs. The new grades provide many of the properties typical of TPU - including high resistance to abrasion, hot air, hydrolysis and oils – along with

improved flexural and tensile performance. Depending on the level of reinforcement, tensile strength lies in the range between 70MPa and 135MPa and flexural strength values range up to 5,700MPa. Elongation at yield is 17.5% and the materials offer inher- ent anti-static performance. Geba says the materials

are well suited for production of protective cases for smartphones and tablets, as well as housings for optical items such as binoculars and protective sporting goods. ❙ www.geba.eu

to reduce scratch width and visibility. All of the new additives are said to provide good anti-scratch performance and can withstand normal processing conditions. They have no impact on mechanical properties at the recom- mended addition levels, according to Croda. ❙ www.crodapolymeradditives.com

for repeated use. “Receiving the FDA

approval is a validation that our efforts to strive for the

best quality bio-based polyamides on the market has paid off,” says Dr Benjamin Brehmer, business manager

for biopolymers at Evonik. “This milestone also allows us to confidently enter new markets with clarity of the regulatory situation.” Vestamid Terra DS is based on decamethylene diamine and sebacic acid derived from castor oil and is 100% bio-based. The polymer is already approved for food contact applications in the EU. ❙ www.evonik.com

metal Tecomid NG40 GR50 GR50 NL HS is a high performan- ce 50% glass fibre reinfor- ced PA compound from Eurotec designed to provide an alternative to die cast metal.

The heat stabilised

grade provides a moisture absorption (ISO 62, 50%RH, 23˚C) of just 1.2%, one tenth that of the company’s PA6,6-based NA series equivalent. It also offers better retention of mecha- nical properties after exposure to moisture. According to the

company, the NG40 GR50 GR50 NL HS grade provides a tensile modulus of 16,500MPa in both the as-moulded and conditio- ned states (ISO 527). The material also moulds easily and is available in flame

retarded versions. ❙ www.eurotec-ep.com
