applications in mind (it dry cycles at 1.69s). Milacron’s future intentions for the M-PET system can also be seen in the product handling system. “Everyone in this industry has a robot that moves and cools. What we have done is change that so we can maintain flexibility but build for the future,” says Sieradzki. This handling system can accommodate special preform features such as crystallisation of the neck and could be directly coupled to coating and/or blowing systems. Swiss-machinery maker Netstal has updated its PET

platform with the introduction of the PET-Line 5000, a high output system designed for use with moulds up to 144 cavities in the volume beverage markets of North America and Asia. It was introduced to the North Ameri- can market at the NPE show. “High output levels are especially needed in these

large beverage markets,” says Netstal PET business unit sales manager Reto Bamert. “Our customers here are generally large bottling plants that require a calculable number of bottle variations, but in such vast quantities that using a 144-cavity preform mould is justified. In these regions, our systems are horizontally integrated into the production process. We see, for

example, our product lining up directly alongside a blow-moulding machine.” The new machine shares many of the features of the

latest PET-Line 2400 and 4000 models, including the energy-saving hybrid drive system that includes adaptive control of the hydraulic system pressure to suit the cycle requirements and braking energy recovery on electrical drive motors. The new model is said to provide an energy saving of 10% over its predecessor. Improved control technology, including adoption of digital controllers and high performance valves and increased oil displacement, shortens response times and speeds mould movement. The company claims mould unlock to lock cycles, including robot part removal, can be reduced by up to 0.5s.
