Plast 2015 Sumitomo Demag Hall 24 Stand D162
Sumitomo SHI Demag will show how its ActiveFlowBal- ance technology can be used to correct balance in multi-cavity injection moulds to improve part quality and minimise mould damage. On the stand of local partner Macam, the machine
maker will demonstrate the technology on an IntElect all-electric moulding unit producing wall plugs on a 32-cavity mould. Parts will be removed using a Yushin robot with end-of-arm tooling by SAS Automation. A camera system by Ushio Lighting of Japan will be used to identify any off-spec product. According to Sumitomo Demag, the patented
ActiveFlowBalance technology combines the company’s direct drive screw technology and high speed NC5 machine controller to hold the screw in a defined fixed position at the transition from filling to holding pressure. This allows pressure to stabilise through the mould, during which time the molten resin can expand into unfilled areas. “It goes where it is wanted rather than where it is forced,” says a spokesperson. Aside from elimination of flash and under-filling,
ActiveFlowBalance can also reduce dimensional variation and clamp force requirement (the latter by up to 40%, the company claims). It is available as an optional module on all machines with an NC5 controller and direct drive Sumitomo injection unit. ❙

Wittmann Group Hall 22 Stand B121-C122 Wittmann Group will be showing the latest additions to its range of injection moulding machines, moulding automation and ancillary equipment in Milan. The main exhibit from the Wittmann Battenfeld injection machinery division will be the new SmartPower servo-hydraulic range, which will be shown in 60 and 120 tonne versions. SmartPower machines utilise the KERS energy recovery system found on its all-electric EcoPower models to offer high levels of energy efficien- cy. Other benefits of the two-platen design include a compact footprint and large mould mounting area. The 120 tonne version will produce a high gloss
coffee machine front panel in a PC/ABS blend in a mould from Wittner of Austria using Wittmann Batten- feld’s Variomould heat-cool mould temperature control and BFMold mould technology. The latter uses a special mould construction to maximise thermal transfer to and from the cavity. This, together with the VarioMould technique, results in a part free of weld lines and sinks. Part removal is by a Wittmann W818 robot. The 60 tonne model will be demonstrated producing
a PA part in a mould supplied by Greiner Packaging of Austria. Part and sprue removal will be handled by a

Wittmann WS80 servo sprue picker. Wittmann Battenfeld will also show a 450 tonne
MacroPower E hybrid machine (servo-electric injection and servo-hydraulic clamp) processing a thermoplastic composite PP part in a mould by Georg Kaufmann of Switzerland. And a 180 tonne EcoPower all-electric model running an IML PP ice cream conveyor in a mould by Mold & Matic. At the other end of the size range, the company will
show a MicroPower 15/10 micromoulding unit on the University of Padua stand in Hall 22 (Stand D125). It will be moulding LSR lenses in a Momentive material using a mould from Awetis of Germany. LSR dosing technol- ogy is by EMT Dosiertechnik, also of Germany. The Wittmann ancillaries display includes a W843
robot from the new Pro series, which uses a modular design allowing it to deliver the optimum blend of performance and cost. The company will also show the latest WP80 sprue picker with Net8 control and two W818 robots. The latter models now feature the company’s R8.3 control with SoftTorque function, which simplifies setting by using the ejector to force the component into the gripper. Other items at the show include several examples
from the Tempro range of temperature controllers, the latest Drymax E and G resin dryers, Feedmax S3 net loaders and Gravimax G14 loaders. ❙
