Imaging to be focus area at Laser World of Photonics

looking to exhibit new products in the years when there’s no Vision show. In 2013, when Laser World of Photonics

last took place, 161 imaging companies exhibited at the trade fair, and 24 per cent of participants were from the imaging sector. Tis year’s show will have a machine vision pavilion in Hall A2, the first time this has been organised. Tere will also be a conference on optical metrology, organised by SPIE, during the World of Photonics Congress, which is collocated with Laser World of Photonics running from 21-25 June. Te 2015 event has expanded to five halls

at Messe München, with 1,150 exhibitors and 27,000 visitors expected to attend. Other highlights include an automotive

One of the focus areas for the Laser World of Photonics trade fair, due to take place in Munich, 22-25 June 2015, will be imaging, the show organiser Messe München has announced. Te biennial event for

optical technologies will run in the rest year of the Vision trade fair in Stuttgart, now that this has switched to a two-year cycle. Laser World of Photonics could therefore become more important for machine vision companies

exhibition illustrating the importance of photonics in the automotive sector, with machine vision for automated production being a big part of the display. Tere will also be an optical metrology and imaging application panel in Hall A2, where end- user oriented presentations will be made on topics ranging from contact-free measurement methods, terahertz spectroscopy and inspection in industrial applications, and high coherence metrology.

expectation that Sony will confirm that it is ceasing production of its 200mm CCD fab in 2017. Several UKIVA members have issued statements about this likely occurrence, with the general consensus being that while this does not mean the end for CCD sensors, the transition from CCD to CMOS will accelerate in the coming years. Another vital part of machine vision technology that has benefitted from photolithography is that

of illumination. LEDs are also manufactured using semiconductor technology and are now the most widely used illumination sources in industrial vision. This is because of their uniformity, output stability, long life and low maintenance. Laser diodes are based on the same principles as LEDs but feature an optical resonator to produce narrowband coherent light. Laser diode illumination is particularly popular in 3D imaging applications either for

triangulation or in structured light patterns.

It will be interesting to see whether vision is celebrated widely during IYL2015. Industrial vision is an enabling technology that touches the lives of an enormous amount of people on a day-to-day basis, yet many will not realise it. Whatever the outcome, it is a certainty that, one way or another, the machine vision industry will continue to benefit from developments in light technology.

Matrox Design Assistant 4 is an integrated development environment that lets you easily, and quickly, solve vision applications by constructing flowcharts instead of writing program code.
