22 19 10 4 Leader Greg Blackman The rise of CMOS T

he news that Sony will discontinue its line of CCD image sensors is probably not too much of a surprise to those in the industry, or at

least industry analysts. CMOS has been advancing in leaps and bounds over the last few years, mainly due to investment in the technology for high volume applications like mobile phone cameras. Te gap in image quality between CCDs, which were once the only option for scientific and industrial vision, and CMOS has closed considerably, and Sony shutting its CCD lines at its Japanese production plant is further evidence of a shiſt away from the older image sensor technology. So what does this mean for the machine vision

market? News of the move can be found in the news section starting on page 4, and Pierre Cambou at market research firm Yole Développement assesses the implications for industrial imaging on page 12. Elsewhere in this issue, there are feature articles

on image processing soſtware (page 14), cabling (page 16), and intelligent transport systems (page 19). Tere is also an article on page 22 focusing on the imaging capabilities used in fingerprint recognition, technology that will be covered in depth at the upcoming SPIE Defence, Security and Sensing (DSS) exhibition and conference. Imaging technology in general plays a big role in the security sector and there is a preview of some of the equipment that will be displayed at the show on page 26.
