■ Gardone Riviera: A quieter, stylish resort on the western side of the lake, popular with older guests seeking relaxation. ■ Malcesine: Popular for weddings, and Monte Baldo offers amazing walking opportunities with superb views. ■ Bardolino: One of the busiest resorts on the eastern side with bars and restaurants and a lakeside promenade which runs all the way to Garda. Famous for its Bardolino wine and the best ice cream on the lake.
■ Riva: A bustling town at the northern end with a spectacular backdrop of mountains, ideal for active visitors as there are lots of walking trails. Riva is also popular with windsurfers. ■ Peschiera: This is perfect for families as it’s on the south of the lake close to family-friendly theme parks. ■ Desenzano: This southern resort is ideal for independent travellers. The train station connects directly to Verona, Venice or Milan for day trips and the ferry connects to most resorts on the lake. ■ Sirmione: Probably the most sophisticated resort on the lake, Sirmione is famous for its thermal baths, impressive Roman ruins and the beautiful 13th-century Scaliger Castle.
