Turn back the clock a few years, and it’s fair to say your clients’ perceptions of what Israel had to offer would focus largely on historical sites, beaches and bustling cities.
Now you can firmly add cuisine to the mix, as Israel’s reputation for outstanding food and wine continues to grow with every passing day.
Those watching the waistline can enjoy delicious salads of chopped tomatoes, diced cucumber, onions and parsley – and then maybe some tangy shakshuka, as the popular dish of eggs in a tomato and herb sauce is called. Or alternatively, they can throw caution to the wind with creamy home-made hummus, a crispy schnitzel and fries or even a portion of knafeh, a winning combination of cheese pastry soaked in sweet syrup.
Of course, Israeli dishes reflect the fact that people have settled here from all over the world: flavours drip from all continents and countries: from the US to Ethiopia, Morocco, Iraq, Poland, France, India, Australia, Argentina and Britain.
And with cooking tours becoming an essential part of any visit to Israel, there’s plenty to tempt your customers.
Taste sensations
Initiatives such as EatWith, which allow tourists to sample homemade food in the kitchens and dining rooms of local homes, continue to grow in popularity and give you a unique selling point (
eatwith.com). Alternatively, you can recommend a culinary walking tour with companies such as Delicious Israel (
deliciousisrael.com), or suggest your clients do it themselves with a Shuk Bites Card that lets them sample the best of Jerusalem’s Mahana Yehuda market for just £17 (
machne.co.il) In Tel Aviv, the choice of places at which to eat is immense: weekend brunch on the beach at Manta Ray (
mantaray.co.il) is great for great people watching, and you can earn some brownie points as booking in advance is essential. In Jaffa, you could make a whole meal out of the humble chickpea – many argue that the best hummus in the country is served at Abu Hassan on Ha’Dolfin Street.
And for something more formal in Jerusalem, recommend Chakra (
chakra-rest.com), where guests can kick off with cocktails such as a Chakrita (tequila, lemon and figs) before moving onto dishes such as chopped liver with onion jam or sea salt and chilli black tiger prawns.
Liquid refreshment
Of course, none of these culinary activities would be complete without some liquid accompaniment, and Israel boasts some spectacular wines and beers as well as a buzzing cocktail scene.
Many companies will offer day tours or incorporate visits to wineries in their itineraries.
