• The revenue generated by the assets over their lifetime

Registering cost is the easiest part; registering revenue is more complicated. What is the value               other valuable? The most challenging part is


registering the risk in a reliable fashion. When the system is used, the risk increases; with the right maintenance, the risk is maintained within given boundaries; but a change in right and timely maintenance creates an ‘asset debt’ that increases the risk of failure.


The airline industry is proving that risks with the most critical parts can be well-managed. The rail industry is following this closely, but incidents still happen unexpectedly, often due to a lack of the right timely maintenance.


The rail infrastructure is a very large network of complex assets. It is not only railway tracks:


signalling systems, safety systems,


communication systems and other control systems play an important role in allowing the network to function. These all need to be well- maintained to manage both the quality and the risks of the network.


With increasing density, more trains, increasing capacity, higher loads, increasing speed and increasing complexity, this is a


major task that requires the right support of information management to be able to perform this challenge.

With planned investments across Europe totalling hundreds of billions of euros in the next 10 to 15 years, we the taxpayers may  reliability and on time arrival/punctuality; reduced travel time; higher frequency of services; and increased number of destinations.


Now more people will start appreciating the train as a way of transport, which will result in less CO2 production and add to a better overall environment – improving quality and reducing risks for society.
