Company sign declaring “We don’t rent pigs,” see com- plete outfi ts worn by Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall as Woodrow F. Call and Augustus “Gus” Mc- Crae, and examine the portrait of the 3 Texas Rangers that hung in the San Antonio bar where Gus taught a surly bartender a lesson. Display cases are fi lled with props like hats, pistols,
and the deck of cards used by Gus while playing “cut the cards” with Lorena. As visitors move through the exhibition, the movie’s soundtrack plays softly in the background, evoking the 1870s and the presence of the beloved characters who pushed the herd north to Montana from the banks of the Rio Grande. While on the set of Lonesome Dove, Wittliff, also
an accomplished photographer, captured the magic of the miniseries in still photographs as well as candid behind-the-scenes shots. These images are published in 2 University of Texas Press books: A Book of Photo- graphs from Lonesome Dove, and A Book on the Making of Lonesome Dove. A portion of Wittliff’s photographs are also on permanent display in the Lonesome Dove exhibition room. Michele Miller, Wittliff Collections’ publications
specialist, says, “We’ve given tours to folks from all over the world. One couple made their vacation to Texas from Norway, in order to follow the Lonesome Dove Trail.”
