NAMES IN THE NEWS
Dr. Elsa Murano, professor and president emerita of Texas A&M University, has been named director of the
Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture. She had been interim director since June 2012. The in- stitute designs and implements science-based develop- ment projects and training programs that fi ght hunger and poverty, specifi cally among small-holder agricultural communities of the developing world. Murano has man- aged a project portfolio of $55 million during her time with the institute. Current projects span the developing regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Murano also served as the U.S. Department of Agricul- ture’s undersecretary for food safety from 2001 to 2004. She was vice chancellor and dean of agriculture and life sciences from 2005 to 2007 and served as president of Texas A&M from 2008 to 2009. David Bechtol, D.V.M., was inducted into the Cattle Production Veterinarian Hall of Fame (CPVHOF). Estab-
lished in 2011, CPVHOF honors the distinguished individu- als who have made a lasting impact on the profession. The Hall of Fame is sponsored by Merck Animal Health,
the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, the Academy of Veterinary Consultants, Bovine Veterinar- ian magazine and Osborn Barr. For 35 years Bechtol, of Canyon, has been operating a consulting business and feedyard research facility. Last year, he was named one of the 20 most infl uential beef and dairy veterinarians in the United States. He and his colleagues have contrib- uted a monthly animal health column for The Cattleman this year. Global animal health and nutrition leader Alltech has appointed Aidan Connolly as Chief Innovation Offi cer,
connected to the company’s global research department. Working closely with Dr. Karl Dawson, vice president and Chief Scientifi c Offi cer, Connolly will be involved with Alltech’s innovation pipeline and lead the commercializa- tion of the company’s research programs. In his new role, Connolly will put together a team within the company’s research department that will primarily focus on developing innovative, nutrition-based technol- ogies. Their new product development will capitalize on the insights gained through the company’s considerable
