HROUGHOUT HISTORY, 2 ORGANIZATIONS HAVE STOOD AS beacons of the Lone Star State’s livestock in- dustry: Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers
Association (TSCRA) and the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (FWSSR). In close proximity within the heart of Cowtown,
these 2 organizations have worked together to educate the public about ranching, livestock and the historic importance and grandeur of the industry. TSCRA got its start in 1877. The FWSSR, known
in its early years as the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show, held its fi rst show in 1896. The show initially served as a way to attract northern beef buy- ers to Texas and to encourage the improvement of Texas cattle. Its mission of education and outreach was expanded through the years to include the gen- eral public. Literally from their be-
ginnings, the TSCRA and FWSSR have walked in step, supporting one another’s efforts. The first FWSSR coincided with the annual meeting of the then-Texas Cattle Raisers Association. Today, in a distinct nod to that historic beginning, the FWSSR hosts a ranch gath- ering during its fi rst week- end, designed to encour- age new members to join TSCRA. In return, the Tex- as and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Foundation (TSCRF)
participates in the rodeo parade and sponsors awards such as the Junior Beef Heifer Show Herdsman Award. Education is also common ground. As Texas has
become more urban, both groups have broadened their outreach, knowing that non-ranching Texans make deci- sions directly affecting the industry. During its 23-day run in 2014, the FWSSR hosted more than 1.1 million visitors, representing both urban and rural residents. When surveyed, the 2014 participants listed livestock as the No. 1 reason for attending the show — and 94 percent said that they would return in 2015. When visitors come in the gate, the FWSSR makes
it possible for them to make the important connection between agriculture and their daily lives; a connec- tion far beyond food and clothing. The show provides
