N RANCHING
ing the last 60 to 80 days prior to calving. During these periods, body condition has a tremendous effect on reproductive performance and overall productivity. There are many seasons and cy-
cles throughout the year that affect both health and nutrition. To disre- gard these special needs areas could be a costly mistake. If either disease or poor nutrition causes infertility for even just 1 season, the missed conceptions could be devastating to a ranch. For example, a venereal disease like trichomoniasis or low levels of nitrate in the feed could easily be responsible for a 40 to 60 percent calf crop loss. Here are some useful reference
materials for your additional edu- cation. Most of these can be found at
beef.tamu.edu. • Body Condition, Nutrition and Reproduction of Beef Cows B-1526-Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

Editor’s note: David T. Bechtol,
D.V.M., of Palo Duro Consultation, Research and Feedlot, with the help and support of other colleagues and Merck Animal Health, provides a quick reference sheet on what to watch for and provide to your beef cattle herd during your 2014 calendar of events. Dr. Jim Furman, owner of The Animal Center, Alliance, Neb., and Dr. Glenn Rogers, Grassy Ridge Consulting, Graford, contribute to this month’s information.
