CHEP Cuts Transport Costs and CO2 Emissions

C

HEP has confirmed that its collaborative transportation programme in the UK & Ireland has removed over 900,000 miles of truck haulage. This equates to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 1,572 metric tons – the equivalent of CO2 emissions from the electricity used by 216 homes for one year - while

delivering significant cost savings for its

customers. Dapo Oke, Logistics Director for CHEP UK & Ireland, said: “The work we’ve done here is building on CHEP’s European-wide transport collaboration programme, and our customers are really starting to see the benefits that such close collaboration can achieve.” Underpinning this success is the level of collaboration that CHEP has managed to achieve across the supply chain. William Stobart, CEO of Eddie Stobart Limited, one of the 9 logistics service providers involved, said: “Every organisation’s supply chain is different and unique, and each initiative varies in terms of size and scale, but ultimately the goal is to reduce transportation distances and empty road miles across their network,

which benefits everyone involved, as well as the environment.”

industry. The V-type design uses less material, helping to reduce the depletion of raw materials. V-type girders weigh, on average, 17% less than comparable box-section profile girders. This reduced crane deadweight produces less wheel pressure, minimising the forces transmitted to the existing building capacity.

structure and increasing the maximum load Consequently, the new Demag V-type crane

provides architects with greater freedom in planning new factory buildings. The design is also suitable for companies, who wish to employ additional lifting equipment in existing assembly and production bays. The patent pending design, which features diaphragm joints, also cuts oscillation of the crane girder by up to 30%. The reduced oscillation characteristics cause lower loads to be transmitted to the crane, its components and the building structure, doubling the service life of the crane to more than 500,000 load changes.

torax Racking Supplies are proud founder members of the SEMA Distributor Group (SDG), embracing the group’s stated aim of maintaining and upholding the exacting standards laid down by SEMA in the UK. To ensure that SDG members offer the best possible service and products, SEMA initiated independent audits of all SDG partner companies earlier this year.

Storax

Racking Supplies passed the SEMA audit with a score of 94% - Highly Commended. At the same time, SEMA issued new rules (A3006) regarding the conditions that must be satisfied in order to use the SEMA logo on racking load notices. Once again, Storax Racking Supplies satisfied all the relevant criteria. In May the SEMA Technical Committee arranged for independent lanyard testing to be carried out to EN 795: 1996 type A for any SEMA member company that was prepared to supply their pallet racking for assessment.

orking through Building Craftsmen, the Dumfries-based contractor, Hart Door Systems has completed the installation of more Speedor

‘Minis’ at Arla Foods’ production facility at Melton Mowbray. The high- speed doors from Hart Door Systems, Newcastle upon Tyne, were installed in an existing maturation store following refurbishment. The Speedors act as airlock doors to improve environmental standards due to their fast open/close cycle. In this instance, where Stilton cheese is produced under the ‘Tuxford’ and ‘Tebbutt’ brands, the doors featured stainless steel to facilitate cleaning in a ‘clean-down’ area,” explains Julian Britnell, sales manager, Hart Door Systems. He adds: “The Speedor Minis are the smallest variant of the Speedor family. We have other Speedors on other Arla sites and we see the food and beverages sector in general as an important market for us due to the engineered door solutions we offer when it comes to British-made high speed doors.” Arla is the international dairy company owned by 13,500 farmers from Denmark, Sweden, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands.

horworld Industries has played its part in shaping the future of the materials handling industry after attending the bi-annual congress of FEM, the European Materials Handling Federation. Held in York from 18th-19th September, the FEM Congress outlined its plans for the next few years with the launch of Vision & Strategy 2020, a new publication that Thorworld helped to draft.

Subtitled

“preserving the competitiveness of the European materials handling, lifting and storage industry,” the document is designed to help shape political opinion and influence across the EU. It is hoped that, by raising awareness of key issues such as market surveillance, FEM will be better placed to support manufacturers from threats such as unregulated equipment, and to ensure that customers benefit from reliable, high-quality and safe materials handling items.

centre in Bradford has been

awarded to KNAPP. The DC – which is due to go live in Spring 2016 – will feature a high level of automation for goods-in, decanting, storage, picking and dispatch, with KNAPP's OSR ShuttleTM

technology

forming the heart of the intralogistics systems. This automated storage and retrieval system, which features transport shuttles on every level of the store, will serve KNAPP's ergonomically designed Pick-it- Easy workstations. The contract also includes the provision of a team of resident KNAPP engineers on site at the DC to ensure system availability through comprehensive preventative maintenance routines and immediate response to any issues.
