Movetech UK makes light work of heavy machinery for Hatton

Textile company cuts yarn production energy costs

SP TextilesA specialist manufacturer of yarn for sports equipment is saving £18,000 a year on energy costs with the installation of variable-speed drives (VSDs) from ABB. WSP Textiles replaced a mechanical speed control system (Variator) on its spinning machines with an ABB high efficiency motor and VSD, cutting out failures and stoppages completely and saving energy costs. The company, based in Gloucestershire, manufactures cloth for billiard and snooker tables, as well as cloth for many well-known tennis ball brands such as Slazenger and Dunlop. A critical part of the process is the spinning machines, which take wool slubbing and form it into a continuous yarn ready for processing. The problem with these machines is their speed control system. The motor runs at full power constantly, with the speed of the spinning machine controlled via a system of variable diameter pulleys (Variator). As well as being inefficient, the system suffers a high number of mechanical failures and spare parts are increasingly difficult to find.

ovetech UK has provided Hatton Systems with new equipment that allows employees to move 2.5 tonnes of machinery around its workshop with just one hand. Hatton Systems supplies equipment for testing new vehicles, including using rolling roads and cooling fans to test emissions and engine performance. The cooling fans, which are used to simulate air flow, weigh up to 2.5 tonnes each, and were previously difficult to move into position. Movetech provided Hovair air skates so, instead of requiring two employees to heave the equipment into place, one person can easily glide, and lock the fan into position. Hovair lightweight air skates use compressed air to virtually eliminate friction and have omni-directional capabilities, meaning that a load can be moved in any direction without the need for complex turning manoeuvres. Available in a variety of sizes and capacities, a set of four air skates can carry anything up to 240 tonnes, with higher capacities possible with larger sets.

ye protection is a crucial component of safety in the workplace as eye damage is one of the most frequently sustained and potentially

serious types of industrial injury. Up to 2,000 workers injure their eyes at work every day across the world, with one in ten of these injuries requiring one or more missed workdays to recover and 10-20% resulting in temporary or permanent vision loss. Although eye protection has largely been accepted as an essential item of personal protection equipment (PPE) for workers in hazardous environments, the same is often not true about prescription safety eyewear. Although an estimated one in four workers wearing protective eyewear will require prescription safety eyewear to carry out their job safely, take up is much less than this. In order to reduce the risk of injury in the workplace, it is important that safety eyewear is selected to offer the right level of protection without causing any deterioration in the user’s ability to see and perform their tasks safely.

ortress Technology (Europe), walked away with the prestigious

“2014 Exceptional Sales

/Company Growth Award” at this year’s Process and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA) Group Industry Awards held at the end of September. The annual awards dinner was held at the Motor Cycle Museum on the first night of the PPMA Show which was taking place at the NEC. This event brings together industry suppliers and customers to recognise the contribution and achievements of the PPMA member companies. There were a record number nominations within this particularly hard fought category which is judged by an independent panel of industry based experts. The award was presented by Mr John Kehoe, Managing Director of TekPak, along with co-hosts for the evening Rory Bremner and Helen Fospero. Fortress, who started manufacturing at their Banbury site at the end of 2010,

manufacture and supply metal detection equipment for industrial use. The largest sector being that of the food industry where the use of metal detectors within the production process is an essential part of providing conformance and peace of mind when it comes to satisfying food safety audits. The judges concluded “Fortress Technology far exceeded their budgeted and forecast sales increase in 2013 which in itself is an exceptional achievement. The fact that this is being done from a UK based manufacturing base is also very heartening”. Sarah Ketchin, Managing Director, stated “it was a significant achievement in challenging times. The increased sales, of over 35%, were not unique to any specific order or territory, but split across both the home and export markets. The results were not luck either, but the result of a focused approach across all levels of the business which included establishing KPI’s and targets. The cornerstones of which included:

UK Manufacture, Export Growth,

Employee Development and Supplier and Customer Partnerships. This award is a true reflection of team effort.” Fortress Technology (Europe) Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the privately owned Toronto based company Fortress Technology Inc. Over 1000 Phantom and Stealth metal detectors have now been manufactured and supplied to the home and export markets since the first one left the Banbury site in January 2011.

Environmental Advantages of Lee Spring Stainless Steel Products

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable and has a high scrap value. In addition, there is no need for coat- ings, which can contaminate the environment as they deteriorate, and make recycling more difficult and expensive. There are also no corrosion products to contaminate the environment. These characteris- tics make stainless steel a green material.
