urday night party. Ranch rodeo tickets will sell out so be quick to order. This month we celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.S. Americans are called
to pause and remember the freedom in which we live and the price paid, over and again, for that liberty. In September, I had the privilege to attend a reunion of my father’s bomb group from World War II. His group mates were few and in their 90s. Some of the men gave short
talks about camp life in that wheat fi eld and olive grove in Italy. The ac- cents of the presenters — southern, midwestern, distinctly Brooklyn, Hispanic — and the attendance of the son of a Tuskeegee Airman were a testament to a time when we all came together for a cause that made our personal agendas unimportant. Though their bodies were old and voices quavered with age, their hearts
seemed to become young and their faces glowed with the mischief of a cunning 19-year-old when they recalled how they “acquisitioned” supplies to make life more comfortable. Most touching was that even 70 years later, these men still suffered
deep sorrow for those who did not survive. If you know a World War II veteran, get him or her to tell you or someone
in your family stories of those days. Like me, most of the adult children knew very little of their parents’ experiences during the war. It seems to take grandchildren to get the survivors to reminisce. In this Thanksgiving month, please allow me to say thank you to the
men and women who have served this country and to those who continue to volunteer to protect our freedom.
