The American Shorthorn Association has released the fall multi-breed expected progeny differences

(EPDs) compiled from the Multi-Breed Genetic Evalua- tion. EPD data has been calculated from performance records of 850,000 head of Shorthorn/Shorthorn com- posite cattle. For more information and updated per- centile rankings and breed averages, visit www.short- horn.org, click on Performance in the red horizontal navigation bar, and then click on Breed Averages in the left navigation menu. American Hereford Association (AHA) fi eld repre- sentatives reported 188 Hereford production sales

during fi scal year 2014, which ended Aug. 31. Bull sales averaged $5,089, up nearly $400 per head, and females $4,637, up nearly $440 per head. The second largest cattle breed in the U.S., Hereford reported 71,444 registrations (a 5.2 percent increase) and 40,295 transfers (a 12.1 percent increase) with 107,277 cows on inventory, up nearly 7 percent. AHA has 3,641 active adult members (a 4 percent increase) and 2,670 active junior members (a 7 percent increase). According to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), domestic Hereford semen sales in- creased 7 percent compared to last year. Texas topped the list of registrations per state at 7,945 with Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota and Oklahoma rounding out the top 5. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has re- leased genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) with the

fall 2014 international cattle evaluation. GE EPDs com- bine pedigree, individual performance and genomic information to save time and money, reduce risk and accelerate the rate of genetic progress. GE EPDs provide more precise EPDs based on a combi- nation of phenotype and DNA. A benefi t of these EPDs is risk reduction through increased accuracies. These increased accuracies save time when assessing young breeding stock. GE EPDs also give the chance to col- lect data on economically important traits, which are expensive or diffi cult to measure. The information from the genomic data can be as in- formative as a bull’s fi rst calf crop or a cow’s lifetime production record. Since the genomic data is incorpo- rated directly into the EPDs, cattle producers will not have to learn how to interpret the new data.
