TACKLING PAYMENT SECURITY LOSSES


British businesses have paid out more than £878,000 over the last three years as a result of to hackers accessing cardholder data, according to figures from UK payment processing company Worldpay.Retail Technology magazine examines how retailers are stemming the flow

ecent data from Worldpay shows that the number of credit and debit cards at risk from security breaches in the UK has grown by a staggering 1518% since 2012 –


from under 200,000 cards to more than 3 million in 2013. At least 6.57 million cards have been put at risk over the past three years. It should therefore come as no surprise that retailers are putting up a fight against payment fraud, both online and in-store. British womenswear retailer Phase Eight recently upgraded its PIN entry devices


(PEDs), as PCI standards compliance needed a system that no longer held any customer card data. The chain, founded in 1979, now has over 100 branded UK stores out of a total of 290 concession around the world. The project, supported by IT company Vista Retail, required the installation of new VeriFone VX820 PEDs, encrypting customer card information and transmitting it straight to the banks. The changeover was implemented within six weeks at sites ranging from Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland to Truro in Cornwall. Another British retailer focusing on payment security, both in-store and online, is


formal menswear brand Moss Bros. Established in 1851, the retailer launched a mobile- optimised site in May 2013. In just over one year, the site has quickly grown to the point that 10% of the company’s online sales are now through mobile devices.
