For stroke care that’s streamlined, paperless and pays for itself
Jonathan Mills of Evoluu Consulting describes a new clinical system that frees up consultants’ time and improves patient outcomes.
C
aptureStroke is a specialist clinical solution designed specifically to
streamline acute stroke care, helping care teams to monitor their performance in real- time, ensure SSNAP (Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme) standards and targets are met, and improve patient outcomes. Now part of Silverlink’s interoperable product portfolio, CaptureStroke looks set to remain the best- of-breed solution for stroke care pathway management in the NHS.
In three short years since it was first released, CaptureStroke has been implemented at more than 50 hospitals across the country. Trusts from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Cornwall have recognised that CaptureStroke’s interoperable capabilities and end-to-end support for the stroke care pathway not only provides tools to capture and manage information, but also to improve care and deliver measurable benefits.
It pays to have it
Crucial to CaptureStroke’s success has been its ability to help trusts meet key targets. Whether it’s taking another step towards paperless care or ensuring SSNAP targets and local standards are met (for Best Practice Tariffs), a typical acute trust can achieve a return on their investment in CaptureStroke in under 12 months by managing as little as a 5% improvement in their target attainment with the solution.
As product development manager, Rob Dixon was instrumental in the development of CaptureStroke from the start. He said: “Capturing data and monitoring activity using CaptureStroke gives trusts a more accurate reflection of their performance against best practice KPIs. Allowing trusts to review their performance in real-time while still ensuring high-quality data collection not only benefits patients and takes pressure off care teams

but allows the trust to track its SSNAP Audit performance and exceed tariff targets, which also improves their ability to qualify for payments.”
Time is money
According to one customer’s research, CaptureStroke has reduced consultants’ time spent on data entry and revision by 78% – down from 45 minutes to eight minutes per patient. Overall, they’ve also seen a reduction of 45% in staff time, generating savings of £19,300 in effort spent on admin and performance review.
At another site, the consultant stroke physician said the system had helped them make strategic pathway improvements and enhanced their performance in attaining time to scan target time by over 170%.
Paperless, intuitive and perfectly suited to multi-disciplinary use, CaptureStroke empowers clinicians with performance and care-intervention notifications whilst providing powerful on-demand reporting and data presentation capabilities.
CaptureStroke’s configurable data collection can be easily aligned to local processes and its browser-based design makes it accessible from any trust connected device: PC, iPad, tablet, mobile, etc.
Safer wards, safer patients
CaptureStroke’s at-a-glance overview of every patient currently under care offers users a safety first summary of a hospital’s stroke ward, including indicators for various targets and potential research trial suitability. Having all the key data available in one place allows for smooth staff handovers, whilst the filtering functions allow clinicians to customise their view instantly.
A powerful administration system allows trusts to securely manage and control access to the system, whilst also providing full audit capabilities to protect patient-data security and integrity. Behind the scenes, CaptureStroke integrates easily with hospital Patient Administration Systems (PAS) and is ITK-accredited – which means it conforms to a number of national interoperability standards and the ‘connect all’ future of NHS IT systems.
In safe hands
Silverlink’s recent acquisition of CaptureStroke has been well received, largely due to the team’s commitment to ensuring business-as- usual and preventing workflow disruptions for users. Silverlink’s top priority during the acquisition was (and still is) to provide stability and business continuity, as well as developing relationships with CaptureStroke sites to ensure future collaboration.
On the future of CaptureStroke, managing director of Silverlink, Tim Quainton, said: “When we looked at CaptureStroke, we saw a fantastic product with a passionate team behind it. The current release has received overwhelmingly positive feedback and I’m sure all the enhancements in the next release will be received in a similar fashion.”
As one of the leading PAS providers for the NHS and with over 20 years of experience supporting NHS best-practice, Silverlink is excited about expanding its strategy of providing modular, best-of-breed systems with both the CaptureStroke and the new CancerPlan product suites; and looks forward to an exciting and innovative future for all its solutions.
