DIGITAL DICTATION, DOCUMENTS & DATA XXXX
Demanding dictation? Is there still a requirement for dictation in healthcare? Olympus marketing manager, Georgina Pavelin, investigates. D
ictation is proven as an effi ciency tool and has been utilised by NHS trusts and other
healthcare organisations for decades. Demand for dictation products continues due to several factors.
Speech recognition requirements
Speech recognition is extremely popular; people are recognising its potential and its technological advances to become a very eff ective tool. However, one of the main factors to consider when implementing speech recognition is the quality of the dictation to be translated, and this comes down to purchasing the right recorder.
Olympus works closely with Dragon speech recognition and our professional recorders have achieved the maximum Dragon rating for eff ective results.
Upgrading equipment
Many organisations are still using old dictation equipment, even old tape machines! Therefore constant upgrades keep demand high – not only will moving to digital further enhance effi ciency of dictating, but you could also save thousands of pounds each year by preventing unnecessary maintenance, tape and battery costs. Olympus is educating organisations and supporting upgrades with dedicated support teams, warranties and demonstrations to help create a smooth transition.

Dictation has advanced dramatically over the years and so keeping your equipment up to date will further improve your organisation’s workfl ow (and budgets). Since Olympus launched the world’s fi rst micro-cassette recorder in 1969 we have consistently evolved technology to meet organisations’ needs. Our current products are all digital and include features such as encryption to protect your data, wi-fi to remotely control your recorder and product ranges for specifi c applications such as our products for dyslexic and blind users.
Selecting a recorder
Diff erent users have diff erent requirements. For example, medical and professional users demand high security of patients’ data, so Olympus has developed 256-bit encryption of fi les and password protection. Many users choose to dictate using their smartphone whilst travelling or for making quick notes; Olympus supports this working and has developed a dictation app (ODDS), which is free to download and also off ers an upgrade for enhanced capabilities.
Whilst we wouldn’t recommend the app for heavy dictation or speech recognition, it is a useful tool to support your dedicated device – plus it also off ers 256-bit encryption for maximum security.
Selecting the right recorder is essential, and understanding your key requirements is key. For example, do you need a portable device for travelling/meetings? Would you like to use speech recognition? How secure does the data need to be? How will it be transcribed? Will you need to capture meetings? Then there is unit costs requirements and compatibility to consider – and so on.
Request a quick reference sales guide so that you can review the features and specifi cations of each model as a comparison. Olympus also arranges sales guides, support and demonstrations for anyone who would like to further develop their understanding.
