Cutting out the need for paper N
HS trusts’ drive to find efficiencies is relentless, and
one of the quick wins identified by many is the need to drive out paper-based processes, including patient notes.
Winscribe is well-placed to share the lessons we have learned through our partnerships with over 90 NHS trusts who have used our digital dictation, speech recognition and workflow solutions. This has led to the
creation of a forthcoming white paper that analyses the deployment of digital dictation, clinical correspondence and speech recognition at a typical NHS trust. There are four areas where
the outpatient process can be improved: digital dictation ensures all documents are paperless from the start; HL7 integration ensures patient data is used to make linked systems and processes more efficient; speech recognition to allow fast turnaround times; and clinical workflow to ensure the patient view is available to clinicians at all times, including document sharing.
In addition, trusts using Winscribe’s digital dictation have started to integrate electronic documents into wider workflows, enabling them to quickly and easily share documents between clinical systems efficiently.
Many NHS trusts are moving from basic digital dictation to speech recognition; the automatic conversion of spoken word to text. Winscribe recommends that trusts take part in a benchmarking exercise to see how the gains from the paperless approach would affect them. This approach uses a before and after comparative study to show where the gains can be made by improving key processes.
It also enables trusts to learn lessons from other hospitals that have already made the savings.
